Mercatello sul Matauro

Luminaria line streets in preparation for the Processione Santa Veronica

Mercatello sul Metauro, a walled medieval village in the Italian Marche, is set against the backdrop of the Apennine Mountains and (only) several kilometers from the well known Tuscany and Umbria regions. Situated at 1600’ and surrounded by mountains, Mercatello enjoys cooling mountain breezes in the mornings and evenings, and mid-days of sunny blue skies.

The landscape is reminiscent of the neighboring Tuscan and Umbrian region with farms and historic stone dwellings tucked into the hills and valleys.  The Marche’s well-known city of Urbino is located a half hour’s drive from Mercatello, and its notable cultural and artistic influences can be seen in the invaluable collection of objects, furniture, frescoes  and works of art in Mercatello’s museums, palazzo and churches dating back to the 12th century.

The picturesque countryside offers plentiful hiking and walking possibilities in a refreshing mountain climate. Historic stone farmhouses and agriturismi beckon to spend an evening sampling their typical hearty Italian cuisine in an unforgettable romantic atmosphere.  Mercatello’s authentic, small-town friendly spirit encourages impromptu get-togethers in its central piazza where you will be welcomed by the locals to practice your Italian language skills!
