International Opera Performance Experience

The Program

The International Opera Performing Experience offers opera professionals, advanced students and music faculty an intense four-week opera skills training in Italy.

Sharpen performing skills

The IOPE program is designed for musicians making a transition to the professional world of performance, university professors wanting to hone or re-hone their skills and for the extremely talented artist who needs more performance time.

Bridge the gap between academic and professional experience

  • Work alongside established professional mentors
  • Expand repertoire
  • Increase knowledge of acting and movement techniques
  • Develop basic Italian language proficiency and pronunciation
  • Perform one semi-staged aria and scenes concert and one full opera
  • Concerts presented in beautiful and historic venues

Hands-on personal attention

Vocal Program:

  • Six one-hour private lessons with select professional performers. See Voice Lessons.
  • Six coaching sessions with an opera conductor or coach accompanist See Vocal Coaching.
  • Three classes per week in Movement, Acting and Character Development. See Stagecraft and Acting.
  • Seminars in Audition Preparation and Music as a Business.
  • Fifteen hours each week in study of the Italian language and pronunciation of Italian opera repertoire. See Italian Language Study.

Collaborative Pianist:  See Collaborative Pianist

  • Daily lessons and coaching with James Caraher and/or Spencer Baker.
  • Daily experience accompanying voice lessons and ensemble rehearsals.
  • Gain experience as a vocal répétiteur.
  • Observe company pianist in ensemble rehearsals.
  • Coach singers in listening, musicianship, diction, character and performance.
  • Accompaniment of soloists and ensembles in concert programs.
  • Seminars in Audition Preparation and Music as a Business.
  • Fifteen hours each week in study of the Italian language and pronunciation. See Italian Language Study.

Conductor Apprentice Program:  See Conductor Apprentice Program

  • Daily lessons and coaching with artistic director  James Caraher.
  • Attend and assist voice lessons and ensemble rehearsals under supervision of IOPE faculty.
  • Conduct soloists and ensembles in one or more concert programs.
  • Seminars in Audition Preparation and Music as a Business.
  • Fifteen hours each week in study of the Italian language and pronunciation

Learn through rehearsal and performance

There will be a semi-staged arias and scenes concert at the end of the second week.  The program culminates in a staged performance of a Verdi’s La Traviata.

The IOPE focuses on providing participants ample opportunity to try out what they are learning in a protected environment. The program is unique in that it teaches through actual rehearsals and performances, offering concerts and productions where participants can experiment with what they are learning in lessons and coaching.
